Ronin Gallery | 2023

For the opening of the fall 2023 season, Ronin Gallery presented Yoshitoshi Tsukioka’s complete woodblock print series One Hundred Views of the Moon (Tsuki hyakushi, 1885-1892). Known for its rich folklore, epic history, and dramatic tellings, this series offered an opportunity to delve into fascinating tales in the catalog captions. From ghosts to heroes, mischievous animals to quiet summer nights, the series highlights the creativity, ingenuity and hybridity of artists working in the woodblock print medium at the turn of the Meiji period (1868-1912). The catalog essay invited the reader to situate themself in the historical context of the Meiji Period and the personal history of a brilliant artist of the age.
