Hokusai: Another Side of Genius

Ronin Gallery | 2022

For Ronin Gallery’s March 2022 exhibition, they wanted to feature a selection of new acquisitions from Hokusai Katsushika’s Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei, c.1830-32) in a way that did not center on the series' most iconic design—Under the Wave Off Kanagawa, often known as “The Great Wave.” The resulting exhibition, Hokusai: Another Side of Genius offered a broad exploration of Hokusai’s oeuvre rather than a parade of the greatest hits. The catalog invited the reader to understand artists' life and artistic development through the opening essay, before diving into specific series and formats.
